A Warm Welcome

My name is Rebecca - mother of seven, teacher, editor, author, and co-owner of Progeny Press. My husband and I have homeschooled our children since 1990. My oldest daughter, Mary, is married and majoring in art at the University of Wisconsin. My oldest son, Paul, is married and currently working full time for Progeny Press as our office manager. My second son, Nathan, is married and currently working full time for Progeny Press as our projects manager and cover artist.

I have always taught using a literature-based curriculum, but back in 1991 when my oldest was in first grade, there was very little curriculum available to teach literature. I wanted my children to:

  • learn to read critically
  • analyze characters, their actions, and the resulting consequences
  • learn literature techniques such as imagery, irony, foreshadowing, flashbacks, etc.
  • connect the ideas, issues, and themes from a book with ideas found in the Bible, and understand what scripture says about these issues
  • know what they believe and why, so when they enter college and adulthood they will have a solid foundation.

Writing study guides for the many book we were reading seemed a natural step. Thus, Progeny Press was born. Since then, I have traveled to conferences across the country, meeting with and speaking to parents and teachers who are enthusiastic about teaching literature and critical reading. These discussions and questions prompted us here at Progeny Press to develop "Ask Rebecca."

I look forward to corresponding with you.

Quotes:

Whenever, therefore, we meet with heathen writers, let us learn from that light of truth which is admirably displayed in their works, that the human mind, fallen as it is, and corrupted from its integrity, is yet invested and adorned by God with excellent talents. If we believe that the Spirit of God is the only foundation of truth, we shall neither reject nor despise the truth itself wherever it shall appear, unless we wish to insult the Spirit of God.
