The Long Way to a New Land is the story of a Swedish family's struggle as they make their way to America. We meet them first in Sweden in 1868, during the "hunger years." Hope reaches them through a letter sent to them by a relative in America, asking them to come to "the land of opportunity." We follow the family as they sell their home and make their way to a boat, which is over-crowded with other emigrants. For twelve days they travel, until finally they see, for the first time, the Statue of Liberty. On shore they, along with all the other emigrants, are examined by doctors and questioned before being allowed into the country. Finally allowed onto American soil the family's eldest son, Carl Erik, exclaims, "Now we are arrived."
